Ayurveda Intro

By John Joseph Immel

Ayurveda is the ancient folk medicine of India. It is a tradition, like acupuncture, based upon 5,000 years of history. Ayurveda Is a holistic medicine, an art and a science using diet, simple home spices and lifestyle changes to bring about radical change in the body. Ayurveda is also about self education, incorporating tools for spiritual and emotional growth. It is a complete system for happiness and fulfillment in the current life.

The three doshas are vata, pitta, and kapha. They describe three general body types and disease patterns. Vata types tend to be deficient. Pitta people have inflammation. Kapha people have excess and phlegm. Understanding the pattern or dosha helps us to understand what's happening from a broad or holistic point of view. Doshas are often a starting point for understanding imbalance.
